Inflammation is the Key, But Cholesterol Matters!

Even though I am very excited about being able to assess for biochemical markers that give more of a time frame of risk of when a cardiac event (heart attack, stroke, etc.) may occur (myeloperoxidase, Lp-PLA2, hsCRP, urinary microalbumin/creatinine ratio, oxidized LDL, F2-Isoprostanes/Creatine ( /, and, I believe in inflammation as the initial cause and propagator of heart disease, I believe lowering cholesterol DOES MATTER. If you lower your total cholesterol to below 150 (LDL below 79 mg/dl), especially by a low-fat, nutrient-dense, high fiber diet you get the best of all worlds, not only do you lower the substance that when oxidized (oxidized LDL) can initiate the initial irritation/injury
to your arterial wall, but you also reduce the substrate (LDL cholesterol) for this process to continue and there is nothing for the immune cells to go after and attack. With a nutrient dense, whole food, plant based diet you get all the protective compounds to protect your arterial wall as well. While statins drugs lower cholesterol and inflammation, they don’t add antioxidants, fiber and other protective compounds to “cool down” the inner lining of your arteries (endothelium) and protect your cholesterol from being oxidized. So I will be testing these markers of inflammation in most any adult, since heart disease is still the number 1 killer in men and women still, but I will also be encouraging the dietary pattern proven to reverse the disease, a low fat nutrient-dense, plant-based diet, to reduce cholesterol naturally and provide the most antioxidant protection to “cool” the artery wall.

I am looking very much forward this summer to go to this conference, International Conference on Nutrition and Medicine – Cardiovascular Disease”. It will have a diet focus on preventing and reversing heart disease.
