AGING (AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION, CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, INFECTIONS)

Zinc at 45 mg of elemental zinc daily as acetate or gluconate administered in the  post-absorptive state (2-3 h after dinner) has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk. Zinc has been shown to be deficient in 30% of some elderly populations and has shown therapeutic value in slowing age-related macular degeneration, cardiovascular risk markers and infections. Doses of elemental zinc of 50 mg or more should be taken with 1 mg of copper. Serum levels of zinc are the most clinically efficient way to assess for zinc status.

__________

CANCER (PROSTATE)

__________

CHOLESTEROL LOWERING

Oat β-glucan (high molecular weight) ≥3 g/d found in high concentrations in oats and oat bran products lowered LDL and total cholesterol. β-glucan is a soluble fiber found in a variety of plant foods such as oats, oat bran and beans. About a cooked cup of these foods gets to the 3 grams per day goal of β-glucan.

OXIDATIVE STRESS

Antioxidant-rich juice 200 ml  (ARJ; 30% red grape, 70% pomegranate; not from concentrate) similar to the antioxidant intake of the Mediterranean dietary pattern containing bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, resveratrol, punicalagin and hydrolysable tannins in a single dose any time daily showed a significant decrease in plasma lipid oxidation and a significant increase in plasma antioxidant capacity.
