6 Cups of Green Tea for Prostate Cancer
Green tea (GT) at 6 cups consumed throughout the day
(~800 mg of polyphenols per day, EGCG) in prostate
cancer patients resulted in green tea polyphenols
found in almost all prostate tissues; a decrease in
inflammation as indicated by a decrease in NFkB
(nuclear factor kappa B); a decrease in a systemic
oxidation marker of urinary oxidative DNA damage 8-oxodG
(8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine) was also decreased in men
consuming GT; and there was a small, but significant
decrease in serum PSA after GT consumption. Green
tea polyphenols (GTP) are absorbed quickly in the small
intestine. The maximum concentration in blood appears
at about 2 hours. Only a small amount of ingested GTPs
are absorbed. GTPs are also unstable at neutral/alkaline
pH and undergo oxidation in the intestine. They are
further degraded to smaller phenolic acids, which in
turn are absorbed in the colon and contribute to its
health benefits. In addition they alter the composition
of the gut microbiota. GT may also be beneficial in
prostatitis. Black tea (BT) at 6 cups per day showed no
benefit on these same parameters affecting the prostate
and BTP were absorbed in the large intestines and have
positive effects on the intestinal microbiota.
