Heart Failure Hospitalizations Jump After Holidays,
Emergency Medicine, October 14, 2014
STATS:
5 million in U.S. have heart failure
550,000 new diagnoses yearly
#1 hospital admissions for those over the age of 65
WHAT IS HEART FAILURE?
The heart is not strong enough to keep pumping out enough blood causing the heart to tire and metabolic changes that cause a fluid back up into lungs and the patient, in a sense, drowns to death.
Systolic Failure – Blood fills up into the ventricles but heart muscle is not strong enough to push it out and there is a back up of fluid into the lungs.
Diastolic Failure – Heart muscles become stiff – so the ventricles can’t fill up with blood adequately to push blood out.

Leaky or bad heart valves

NSAIDS – nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can make heart failure worse
